Schengen Visa Photo from China: Verify the Destination and Visa Centre
A practical evidence checklist for 35 × 45mm Schengen visa photos submitted from China, with examples of route-specific differences and editing risks.
There is no single “China-to-Schengen photo portal.” The destination country, the responsible consulate and the visa application centre determine the current submission instructions. A 35 × 45mm frame is common, but it is only the start of the check.

Example 1: France application handled by TLScontact
France-Visas publishes the official application information, while the local appointment and document handoff may be operated by TLScontact. Start from the France-Visas page linked to your application and follow the centre named there. Do not rely on an old blog post or a photo shop’s generic “European visa” setting.

Example 2: Germany application handled through a local service provider
German missions publish their own China guidance and link to the responsible service provider. The required number of prints, appointment procedure and document checklist can change independently from the image dimensions.

Example 3: another Schengen destination
The Netherlands, Italy, Spain and other Schengen destinations use their own official pages and contracted centres. A photo accepted for one appointment is not evidence that every other centre uses the same handoff or file request.
Use the EU’s official consulate finder to identify the responsible member state, then follow that state’s official China application page: Where and how to apply for a Schengen visa.
What to confirm before preparing the photo
Record these facts from the current official or contracted-centre page:
- Destination country and responsible consulate.
- Application centre and appointment location.
- Printed photo dimensions and number of copies.
- Whether a digital upload is also requested.
- Recency, background, head-size and expression rules.
- Whether software alteration is restricted.
If a page only says “recent passport photo,” open the linked checklist or contact the centre before assuming a 35 × 45mm output is sufficient.
Three common preparation failures
- Reusing a 33 × 48mm Chinese document crop and trimming it into 35 × 45mm changes the head margins.
- Reusing a US 2 × 2 inch square creates a different composition even if the face looks centred.
- Replacing the background can leave halos around dark hair and shoulders; a new photo against a suitable background is safer.
